Choosing the right advancement plan at your job can be difficult when you're not quite sure where you want to go. Your current position might offer several growth options. Here are some tips on how you can choose what's right for you.

Talk to a Career Counselor

Career counselors are people who can give you an objective opinion about your future. They can suggest certain career moves that might be better for you than others are. They'll use a combination of factors to determine that such as your personality traits, feedback from your employer and information you've told them in a one-on-one meeting with them.

Take Relevant Assessments

You can also take some assessments that will help you determine what the right fit is for you when you get ready to make your move. You can take personality assessments, or you can take assessments that actually have you doing the tasks of the different jobs to see if they come easy for you.  You will most likely figure out what's best for you by using that strategy. Once you know what you qualify for, you can let your superiors know that you would like to move in that direction.

Take a Practice Run

If all else fails, you can always try a trial run in the job you desire. For example, your employer may allow you to play the role of a supervisor for a day to test your maturity level and how you handle yourself under pressure. Many jobs offer these trial runs or test runs to people. Take advantage of it and see which position is more fitting for you to evolve into next.

Now that you know how to make the right choice, it's time to start applying yourself so that you can grab the position you want.
